A New Year — Will You Be Happy in It?

Going by the headline of this article, you may think, “Whoa, is this guy a fortune teller or something?” Well, I’m no fortune teller, I’m just a present believer. I’m not against the new year celebrations; I’ve been excitingly involved in new year’s celebrations since I developed an understanding of what it was while I was growing up. When I was a kid, I would celebrate the new year with my friends and family.

And later on in life, as a working adult, I would celebrate the new year every year with my colleagues. They would take me to a bar, and they would drink their hearts out while I sipped on my diet coke. I would watch them lose track of time and get so drunk to lose their minds. I would try to discourage them from drinking because I was never fond of drinkers, not even to this day.

So, my colleagues would cuss me in jest and say, “Come on, Satish! You enjoy your diet coke, and let us enjoy our alcohol. Come on, man! It’s new year’s eve, and we wanna celebrate!” So, I would let them be because I didn’t want to be a mood spoiler, and they always respected the fact that I would go to a bar with them many times, but I would never even feel the slightest excitement to taste the alcohol.

While I was growing up, I had seen my father, who had given in to alcohol and smoking. Due to his addiction, he would often beat up my Ma, me, and my brother. Eventually, his addiction consumed him so much that he lost his life to liver damage at 42. After seeing my father living so miserably, I was certain that any form of addiction was not worth having for me.

So, after each new year’s celebration, we would go about our same humdrum ways of living, doing the same routine jobs, and nothing made our new year happy.

I would make a new resolution every year — “I will start working out and be regular and build muscles and all.” I would start on the first day of the new year, and then it would only last for a week. After that, it would be the same routine life of reckless eating and unhealthy living for the rest of the year.

So, these new year celebrations brought me joy and excitement only during the turn of calendars, which would never last throughout the year.

“A new year brings us hope, it’s another opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start all over and redefine our lives. But if we celebrate it only on new year’s eve, and then, it’s just the same routine lives for us for the rest of the year, what’s the use of wishing each other a happy new year?”, I would often ask myself this question.

When the pandemic brought the world down, I started working from home, and that work-from-home routine made things even worse for me. Read my article 7 Natural Ways to Improve Your digestion, where I talk about my struggle with not-so-good health during the pandemic and how I overcame it.

I lost my job during the pandemic, and it gave me a chance to discover the writer in me, but I didn’t know how to reach out to the world with my writing, so I started learning about blogging and website designing. And then, I designed and created this website myself. I started writing blogs and articles. I don’t know how many people read my articles and blogs, but the one thing I know for sure is I enjoy writing. I believe I’m trying to make a difference through words.

So this new year, I’m not going to be the person I used to be, because I’m now the person I always wanted to be. I’m living my dream. I learn something new every day, and I try to implement it in my writing and YouTube videos.

I’ve started living one day at a time to get my life’s purpose accomplished. For the people who are already pursuing their ultimate purpose or goal or dream for their life, this change of calendars doesn’t matter. I think the true celebrations will come only when we’ve started living the lives of our dreams. Until then, it’s going to be only a change of calendars.

So define some purpose for your life if you haven’t and dedicate yourself to fulfilling it. If you already have one, continue to pursue that purpose. Until then, live in the present, one day and one hour at a time.

I wish you a Happy New Day. On this new day, learn, live and love more. Celebrate every single day of your life, instead of getting wasted only on January 1st each year, eventually wasting the entire year.

Wait, did you notice it’s January 1st of this year, another new day to learn, live, and love more? Happy first of January to you. Let the celebration continue from this day to every day for the rest of the year and the rest of your life. Celebrate life each day and keep getting better at every aspect of your life each day.

Now before you get excited about the New Year celebrations, I want you to ask yourself these questions in addition to the question I asked in the title of this blog post and try to find your answers to make your year a Happy New Year:

Am I living my dream life?

I mean whatever it is you are doing, is it making you stressed, or is it bringing you excitement? If you are a student and you’re studying some course, are you enjoying learning that course? If you are an adult and you are working some job or business, are you enjoying working in that line of work?

If your answer to these questions is yes, then bingo, you are on the right path. Keep up the good work and keep getting better throughout this whole year and the year after that until you’ve started living your dream life. But if your answer is no, then take time to think if this new year’s celebration is truly worth it or if there’s something you need to do to make your year truly a happy new year.

Am I healthy?

One cannot celebrate anything in life if one is not well. For the people who are going through something terminal, my thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones, but for those who are still healthy but are on the path of ruining their health because of bad eating habits, stressful living, and addictions, this new year is your wakeup call. You have to stand up for your health because if you don’t stand up for it now, you will soon begin to struggle with it, and then you won’t be able to celebrate anything.

Life is uncertain, but death is certain. Even a healthy person could die at any time. Death is in the Creator’s hands but embracing this precious human life and making something worthwhile out of it is in our hands.

This human life is a great opportunity we have to earn our salvation, and it is only possible when we have good health. Please read my article, Health is Wealth – It Has to Be Prioritized, where I emphasize the importance of health in our life.

Also, read my article, How to Deal with Life When Everything Seems Chaotic, where I talk about someone I knew who had given in to addiction and how he overcame it. So, if you have any addictions, you can overcome them too. Help is available, you just need to ask for it.

Am I happy with my relationships?

Is your new year going to be happy if you have the same toxic people in your life, or are you the one who has a toxic mentality toward your dear ones?

If you have toxic people in your life, you better steer clear of them at all costs. If those toxic people are your dear ones, and they are going through some mental sickness, be patient with them, and offer them help; if they refuse your help, just be kind to them and pray for them and get on with your life.

If you are the one who is full of toxicity, and you are never grateful for all the love you receive, it’s time to change your mindset, because love is a highly-priced commodity; and if you lose it, you’ll spend the rest of your life being miserable and alone, and nobody likes that.

Be it a new year or life, it’s worth celebrating only when you have some kind-hearted, genuinely loving people in your life. So, always practice love, trust, kindness, and forgiveness to maintain amicable relationships with your dear ones.

Am I happy in my life?

Should I continue pretending to be happy and celebrate this new year and every year after this for the rest of my life with my fake friends, drinking and getting wasted, or should I start changing my life for the best from this January 1st to the rest of my life?

Once again, you are the one who knows the answers to these questions. If you think you’re happy in your life, you continue to be happy, because that’s the whole purpose of this human life, “To be happy” but if you are not, please read my article, How to Be Happy in Life to get some perspective if you are looking to better your life.
